Paryavaran Mitra is a non-profit organization based in Gujarat. It primarily works on the socio-
environmental issues aiming at the betterment of the state. It was initiated back in 1997 as an environ-
legal cell of the Center for Social Justice within Janvikas. It aimed to advocate human rights in context of
increasing environmental degradation and pollution.
Since May 1 2015; it has become an autonomous institution as a part of decentralization policy of
Janvikas. Over the years, it has steadily developed and established itself in the field of environment.
Some of the most remarkable work of the institute involves encouraging public participation in
environmental decision making processes, environmental advocacy and generating awareness through
various programmes, seminars, and trainings among the citizens of the state. It promotes sustainable
development in the policy making process through participation in the environmental governance at
local, regional and national level. It has also been actively supporting international initiatives working
towards evolving systems and processes in context of sustainable development.
The distinctive contribution of Paryavaran Mitra is also majorly in Public Interest Litigation. For more
than two decades, it has ensured support and presence in all and one litigations in the state of Gujarat.
Paryavaran Mitra is also an observer organization in United Nations Framework Convention on Climate
Change (UNFCCC) and has been a constant participant in conferences of the parties and high-level
