Sparrows are important members of our eco-system. Due to human interventions, the sparrows are facing extinction. The Green Catalyst team initiated an event with a theme ‘I Love Sparrows’ as a tribute to ‘The World Sparrow Day’. The theme celebrates an age old relationship of the sparrows and humans. We have been coexisting with nature for all our past, but in the modern context our relationship seems to be blurring. Hence, this event focused on expert discussions, group discussions, and problem-solving of causes, consequences and mitigation for existence of sparrows in the future. The location selection was an add-on to the cause as Wildlife Care Centre is the wildlife first hospital in Gujarat. The further details of the event are discussed below.
Objective of the event:
i. To spread awareness regarding importance of sparrows ii. To discuss the causes of extinction of sparrows iii. To bring up a platform for like-minded people to discuss their concerns regarding the species and their mitigation ideas.
The program initiated with the speech of Mr. Mahesh Pandya explaining the significance of sparrow day and their importance in our eco system. He invoked discussions regarding how international organizations such as United Nations should acknowledge the importance of these little creatures and dedicate a day for propagating awareness and activism on an international level. Following it Mr. Jagat Kinkhabwala, also widely known as Sparrow Man of Ahmedabad; discussed regarding the causes of the issue and all the aspects of their disappearance from our backyards. Thereafter, Mr. Rushi Pathak discussed on a wider topic of importance of birds in our eco system, with giving references of his lifelong experiences of bird rescue operations. Conclusively, a discussion session was held with the participants and discussions were initiated for solving the issue at an individual level. Sparrow houses were then distributed as a participatory gift for helping out our bit to the cause.
